“We are not primarily put on the Earth to see through one another, but to see one another through.”
–Peter De Vries

A Legacy Letter may be written by anyone of any age. It offers an opportunity to write in a focused and personal way:
  • About your ancestry.
  • About the values, beliefs and principles by which you have lived and the wisdom gathered during your life-time.
  • Expressions of love and affirmation for your descendants.

“A Legacy from My Father” and “A Legacy Letter to My Descendants” are examples of brief Legacy Letters.

Your Legacy Letter may be a few paragraphs or several pages long. It may stand on its own or be bound in a book. Written from your heart, it is your unique statement about your life.

The Allianz American Legacies Study, completed in 2005, found four meaningful pillars of legacy:

  1. Values and Life lessons,
  2. Instructions and wishes to be fulfilled,
  3. Personal possessions of emotional value, and
  4. Financial assets or real estate.

According to the study, non-material assets parents leave to their children are immensely important to many heirs, in some cases more than the financial and other tangible elements of inheritance. A legal will, a living will, and a Legacy Letter represent the totality of these pillars, and provide a complete framework to address the needs of all concerned.

Edna C. Groves, personal legacy biographer, is available to capture your story for your Legacy Letter in the privacy of your home. She also teaches the process in a workshop or retreat format for people who wish to write their Legacy Letter themselves. Additionally she gives brief talks and is available as a keynote speaker.
